The family and friends of Vicky White, the corrections officer who went missing on Friday with an inmate, are ‘devastated’ by the accusation that she helped a man accused of murder escape from jail.
White, an assistant director of corrections, is now the subject of a warrant and accused of helping inmate Casey White, 38, escape from the Lauderdale County Detention Center on Friday. The two are not related, according to officials.
Pat Davis said that anyone who knows her daughter says the situation doesn’t make sense.
‘As a mother, I didn’t know how to act because I thought at first it was a mistake. And then when I found out for sure it was, it was just disbelief,’ Davis said in an interview with WAAY 31.
The mother said she doesn’t think her daughter would willingly help an inmate escape, and says she’s in disbelief about the entire situation and wants her daughter to return home.
‘She’s never done anything. I bet she’s never even had a speeding ticket. But I mean, she’s always been what I say, a good person. And like I say, this is all a shock.’
Vicky White had been living with her mother for the past five weeks after selling her home, but never mentioned her retirement or Casey White, her mother said.
‘I never heard of him, never seen his picture, nothing. I didn’t know anything about him,’ Davis said.
The development has left Vicky White’s friends and co-workers in complete shock. She was on the brink of retiring, with Friday set to be her last day of work after nearly two decades with the department.
Sheriff Rick Singleton told CNN of Vicky White’s ‘unblemished record.’
‘All of her co-workers are devastated. We’ve never had a situation like this with Vicky White. She was a model employee,’ Singleton said.
‘If she did this willingly, and all indications are that she did . . . I guess we’re trying to hold on to that last straw of hope that maybe for some reason she was threatened and did this under coercion, but absolutely you’d feel betrayed,’ he added.
On Monday, an arrest warrant for Vicky White was issued for permitting or facilitating escape in the first degree.
Casey White, 38, is serving a 75-year sentence for a series of violent crimes going back to 2015 including attempted murder and kidnapping. In 2020 he was convicted of a separate murder, which he confessed to in prison.
On Friday, Vicky White escorted the inmate to the courthouse for an ‘alleged mental health evaluation,’ which was not on the court’s schedule for the day.
The vehicle Vicky White used to transport the inmate was found several hours later in a nearby shopping center. The two have not yet been located.
The sheriff said there’s no clear evidence whether Vicky White and Casey White had a personal or romantic relationship, though it is a possibility.
Vicky White carried a gun, so authorities consider Casey White to be armed.
Officials are offering up to $10,000 for information leading to the escaped inmate and Vicky White.
