An investigation into the 2008 death of Casey White’s ex-girlfriend has been reopened as the manhunt for the accused murderer and prison guard Vicky White concluded on Monday.
Christy Shelton, 31, was fatally shot by a sawed-off shotgun and found in a trailer owned by Casey White’s mother. Limestone County officials in Alabama initially declared her death a suicide, but following pressure from Shelton’s family have reopened the case.
‘Casey White was with my mom the night that she committed suicide,’ Christy Shelton’s daughter Somer Mitchell told
Police have confirmed White was there at the time of her death, but initially ruled him out as a suspect following an investigation.
His escape from jail and subsequent manhunt that lasted nearly two weeks opened a floodgate of emotions for Christy’s family, who say they don’t believe she herself.
‘Nothing was really done. I don’t think they took him in for questioning. So maybe this video will fall into the right hands of someone that can actually make a difference or look into it more maybe investigate, I’m not really sure,’ Somer said.
Seven years after Christy’s death, in 2015, White broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and shot at two of her friends and her dog, landing him a 75-year sentence in jail.
A spokesperson for the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office says that they are communicating with the family and reviewing the case.
Casey White had been in Lauderdale County jail in Alabama awaiting the trial for capital murder charges he faces from a fatal stabbing in 2020. Those charges are in addition to his previous sentencing of 75 years.
On April 29, with the help of prison guard Vicky White, he escaped jail. The pair, who shared a ‘special relationship’ were apprehended by police on Monday, concluding an 11-day manhunt with a car crash. As police approached the tipped over vehicle, Vicky White shot herself in the head.
