Former President has appealed a judge’s civil contempt order hitting him with a $10,000 daily fine for not complying with a subpoena in a New York investigation into his company.
Trump filed his appeal a day the fine went into effect on Tuesday and Judge Arthur Engoron issued a written order affirming his contempt finding.
New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office has been investigating whether the Trump Organization provided fraudulent information to tax officials, borrowers and lenders.
The office requested that Engoron hold Trump in contempt for failing to comply with a subpoena issued in December.
Trump may not be responsible for paying the daily fine until the appeal is resolved.
Engoron in a written order on Tuesday stated that Trump ‘willfully disobeyed’ the subpoena order to provide documents and that his action harmed James’ civil investigation.
James criticized Trump’s appeal.
‘The judge’s order was clear: Donald J Trump is in contempt of court and must pay $10,000 a day until he complies with our subpoenas,’ James stated. ‘We’ve seen this playbook before, and it has never stopped our investigation of Mr Trump and his organization. This time is no different.’
