Two grandparents in Virginia are facing murder charges after their dog fatally attacked their 7-year-old granddaughter earlier this year.

Olivia Grace Floyd was viciously attacked by a 120-pound Rottweiler with a history of violent attacks at her grandparents’ home in Waynesboro, Virginia on January 29.

An obituary for the young girl said that after the attack she was taken to Augusta Health, a hospital located in Fishersville, Virginia, where she died.

Her step-grandfather, Stephen Kachmar, 60, and grandmother, Penny Lee Bashlor, 64, each face up to 70 years in prison. They each face charges of non-capital murder, involuntary manslaughter, child abuse, child cruelty and a charge related to keeping a vicious dog that caused a serious injury to a person.

‘Olivia was a 2nd grader are Wilson Elementary,’ her obituary says. ‘She loved cheerleading, gymnastics, dance, unicorns and animals. She attended Linville Creek Church of the Brethren in Broadway. Olivia was a spunky, sweet and caring little girl who got along with everyone and loved life.’

Friends and family who attended her services were asked to wear pink and purple, which were her favorite colors.

Olivia’s parents, identified as 39-year-old Brooks Anthony and 37-year-old Alicia Floyd on a GoFundMe, were also charged with cruelty resulting in jury to a child. That charge could carry a sentence of up to five years behind bars.

The GoFundMe fundraiser brought in a total of $29,480 for Olivia’s funeral expenses.

‘The outpouring of love and support through financial contributions, messages, meals delivered and so much more for Brooks and Alicia has been amazing,’ the fundraiser’s organizers wrote.

The GoFundMe also noted that Olivia left behind a younger sister, Ava.

Initial reports of the January attack reveal another woman was injured in the attack, but police did not identify her.

Officers seized the dog for standard quarantine protocol at a local shelter, police said.
