Not guilty pleas were entered in court Tuesday for Lori Vallow, the Idaho mom accused of murdering her two children.
Vallow and her husband, Chad Daybell, are charged with multiple counts of conspiracy to commit murder and first-degree murder, among other crimes, in the deaths of her children, Joshua (J.J.) Vallow and Tylee Ryan.
Vallow and Daybell will be tried jointly early next year, NBC News reported.
The children were found buried in his backyard in Idaho in June 2020 after they were last seen in September 2019. The couple also faces charges related to the death of Daybell’s first wife, Tammy Daybell, who was in October 2019, two weeks before they married.
Daybell has previously pleaded not guilty to charges against him. He is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and two counts of conspiracy. Prosecutors are seeking a death penalty sentence.
Vallow is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and two counts of conspiracy. If convicted, she could face the death penalty or a life sentence, according to KTVB.
Vallow was committed to a psychiatric ward last June but was moved last week to prison after being deemed fit to proceed forward in the trial. People who know Vallow have come out to express concerns about her mental state and her belief in doomsday. Indictments said that the couple ‘did endorse and espouse religious beliefs for the purpose of encouraging and/or justifying the homicides’ of Tylee, Joshua and Tammy Daybell.
The children were reported missing in November 2019 by the grandparents of J.J., who called police to conduct a welfare check.
Vallow and Daybell never reported the children missing, instead fleeing the state, police said.
They were found in Hawaii in January 2020, prompting authorities to tell Vallow she had until the end of the month to ‘physically produce her children.’ When she didn’t she was charged with two counts of desertion and nonsupport of dependent children. She pleaded not guilty.
After the discovery of the children’s remains, Daybell was taken into custody and charged with two counts of destruction, alteration and concealment of evidence, and two counts of conspiracy to commit destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence. He has pleaded not guilty.
Vallow was then charged with additional counts of conspiracy to commit destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence. She pleaded not guilty.
