A mother admitted to throwing her newborn son off a second-story balcony and killing him.

Amber Bowling pleaded guilty to the murder of her baby in court on Monday, according to .

Bowling was 21 years old when she gave birth to her son in December 2018. She put her crying infant in a trash bag and threw it over an apartment complex banister that was two floors up, the TV station reported.

She committed the act in , Kentucky, just hours after giving birth to him, according to authorities at the time.

‘It’s heartbreaking,’ Kentucky State Police Trooper Lloyd Cochran told before Bowling was arrested.

‘Baffles your mind thinking about who could have done this and why.’

At the time of the incident, police got a call reporting that an infant was dead in a garbage bag on the front porch of the apartment complex.

A neighbor at the complex, Paul Herd, said he was getting home from work when he saw a trash bag near the stairs to his unit on the second floor. He took the child into his home and called police, but the infant died shortly after.

‘I couldn’t sleep at night knowing, just seeing what he’s seen, over and over in your mind again,’ Herd’s son Tyler said.

The infant boy was found bleeding from the brain with a cranial fracture and also suffered broken bones, according to Bowling’s arrest citation. The mother was charged with murder the next day.

An autopsy report showed that the boy died of blunt-force trauma injuries.

‘Why didn’t she take that child to the hospital and say, “I can’t raise it?” said Clay County Sheriff Angie Johnson. ‘There’s families waiting on these kids.’

A judge in August 2019 deemed Bowling competent to stand trial, according to the Clay County Circuit Clerk.

Her sentencing date is set for June 27 and she faces a recommended punishment of 40 years behind bars.
