Pilot dies after US Navy fighter jet crashes

A fighter jet pilot has died after crashing in the southern California desert.

The US Navy confirmed today that one of their FA-18E Super Hornet fighter jets had crashed near Trona.

It was found 230 miles southeast of the jet’s base at Naval Air Station in Lemoore, California.

No civilians were hurt.

The pilot’s identity will be released 24 hours after their family has been informed, the US Navy confirmed.

In a statement, a spokesperson said: ‘An F/A-18E Super Hornet based at Naval Air Station Lemoore, Calif. crashed in the vicinity of Trona, CA June 3 at approximately 2:30 p.m. PDT.

‘The pilot is confirmed deceased.

‘The identity of the pilot will not be released until 24 hours after the next of kin have been notified.’

Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake Federal Firefighters and Naval Security Forces were sent to the crash site once the alarm was raised.

‘More information will be made available at the earliest opportunity,’ the US Navy added this morning.

The Naval Air Station at Lemoore is the US Navy’s newest and largest master jet base.

The Strike Fighter Wing Pacific fleet, along with its associated squadrons, is based at the site.

In Oceanside, four hours from Lemoore,

One woman was and one man was seriously injured when the plane crashed near the city’s airport.

The  Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement: ‘A single-engine Cessna 208B crashed while the pilot was trying to land at Oceanside Municipal Airport in Oceanside, California around 2 p.m. local time today.

‘Two people were on board. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.’
